Many people think that to be in Ancient Rus ‘ of the X century and walk the earth, which still retain traces of our ancestors, was now impossible. It is not so! Not far from Smolensk, on the Dnieper river is the largest monument of the epoch of formation of old Russian state – Gnezdovo archaeological complex. If many other ancient Russian towns (Novgorod, Pskov, Suzdal, etc.) in the modern times have been built up with houses and factories, life in Gnezdovo stuck in the middle Ages. This is one of the few places that still have Large mounds – the burial of the Russian princes of the tenth century. Gnezdovo is one of the biggest in Europe number of barrows (more than 4,500), two towns, a few open settlements. There is every reason to believe that Gnezdovo mentioned in the middle of the tenth century under the name “fortress Miminiska” by the Byzantine Emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus, and is probably an ancient Smolensk. The total protected area of the monument is about 200 hectares and it is one of the largest early medieval monuments on the territory of Ancient Russia. Continue reading

Got up early. The day here starts at 5 and ends at 9, because of the darkness.
After Breakfast, immediately proceeded to business: today has scanned the skull of a Rhino. The skull consisted of two parts: the upper and lower jaw. Scanned in less than an hour, and since the skull could “disassemble” the scan has turned out amazingly detailed: you can look in your mouth and inspect every tooth on all sides.
Today Louis invited us to the nearest place of excavation to show how it actually works. The excavations so far nothing major is found, but will definitely find: the place is extremely gracious. Louis immediately taught us how to identify minerals by color, structure and pattern. After that, it immediately became clear what she was talking about yesterday: fossils are EVERYWHERE. Just lying on the ground: bones of animals, fish, fossil remains of trees, in large numbers.
The remains of the hippopotamus: phalanx.
While it was windy, Louis decided to make a Photomap of the area. This is done by hanging the Camera to the kite. The survey area occurs in high resolution at an altitude of about 50 meters.
Meanwhile Francisco was able to talk with local volunteers. They say that 10 years ago, their life was very different: all were very poor and lived with the only hope to ever leave the city to get work. Family Louise Leakey gave local residents the opportunity to work, to help paleontologists, to feel needed. Love them very much, and sincerely grateful for the opportunity to change your future.
