Interesting archaeological finds made on the Taman Peninsula in the past year

Unusual coin with ant, one of the rarest vases in the world, the oldest temple in the territory of Russia – this is only a small part of the findings Phanagorian archaeological expedition in the current field season

The discoveries of the world level occur in Phanagoria (Taman Peninsula) quite often – the town existed for about 1500 years, it was located on the area of 65 hectares, a third of its territory today at the bottom of the sea, and “land” part after the departure of the inhabitants never were under construction.

This summer in “the Upper town” (it was located here in ancient times the centre) scientists revealed the oldest layers belonging to VI – V centuries BC And the “Lower city” (excavation, which began last year) began research of the youngest layers of the X – XI centuries in both – findings that open new pages of history.

So, in the “Upper town” found city block, apparently, burned in first – second quarter of V century BC As it is written in one of the written sources,it was around this time the Bosporan Kingdom changed the power – one dynasty changed another. The study quarter will continue in the coming year. But, if we compare the findings of the same time, made in other cities of the Bosporan Kingdom, it appears that the transfer of power was accompanied by an armed confrontation, leading to the destruction and fires. It also opened part of the building with thick walls. Scientists suggest that it is the Church of the VI century BC If further studies confirm their hypothesis, it will be the most ancient temple, found on the territory of modern Russia.

Another finding of the shards of the vase, produced in the ancient Greek city Klazomenai (located on the territory of modern Turkey). It depicts a horseman, for whom the dog is running. These vases are so rare that their classification made in 1952, since then, has not changed too little material.

Luck experts believe the discovery of silver coins in 1/48 of a drachma with a diameter less than 1 cm, which depicts an ant. Archeologists date the coin to the first half of V BC Similar to it in the world only a few hundred. “Ant” can be called the oldest coin found on the territory of Russia.

In the “Lower city” archaeologists are again able to try to find the answer to the question: “Why people left the Fanagoria in the X – beginning of XI centuries?” Comparing the findings of the current year and earlier studies, scientists hypothesized that the cause “eviction” Fanagoria may be the emergence in these places squads of Russian (Slavic) Prince Oleg (Helga), mentioned by several sources. The fact that the Slavs, wishing to conquer a city, usually offered to the residents to leave. Otherwise, the city was destroyed. In Phanagoria X – XI centuries there are no traces of fire and destruction, which may mean residents at that time of the Khazar city accepted the proposal of the Slavs and left it. As it turned out later – forever. “We can assume that the nascent Russian state in those years was actively involved in political and public life of the region”, – assessed the findings of the scientific expedition leader, doctor of historical Sciences Vladimir Kuznetsov.

Since 2004 Phanagorian expedition conducted by the Institute of archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences with support of Fund of Oleg Deripaska “Volnoe Delo”. During this time its content has been allocated more than 340 million rubles, which was built by the scientific-cultural centre, set in order the camp of archaeologists, and established round-the-clock protection of the territory of the future Museum-reserve, the latest technology equipped with the underwater unit, publishes books, provides training in Kuban state University. The work does not stop. And – most importantly – Fanagoria never ceases to amaze.
